Candy Gram: Miss C.

In our ongoing Q&A series --"The Candy Gram"-- we ask the same quirky questions of burlesque's various performers. If you want to be added to the mix, drop Tanya Cheex a line at t.cheex AT gmail DOT com. Today, say hello to Miss C.

What is your hometown?
Halifax, "Good Times in the Maritimes!" Nova Scotia Canada

How long have you been interested in burlesque/performing?
I have been performing pretty much my whole life with my debut being the time I got to wear the highly coveted tea towel on my head as the Virgin Mary in my grade three Christmas play. I also did ballet, tap, jazz, and drama at school. As I got older I was "Club Kid" known around town for my over the top outfits/wigs/shoes which landed me some gigs as a GoGo dancer at night clubs/raves, etc. It was through these events that I ended up getting involved in the beginning of the burlesque scene here in 2004. I'd always been a rockabilly girl at heart and had been familiar to burlesque since I was a kid (my mother even used to hum The Stripper if I so much as began to take off my sweater!) so performing burlesque felt like a natural progression.

How many pairs of pasties do you own?
Well I have a pasty making business (Pretty Titty Pasties) so I've always got LOTS of pasties around. I wouldn't even know how many I personally have. They are everywhere in my house. You can't open a junk drawer or go in the bathroom or even sit on my couch without finding a pair.

What are your three favorite songs to perform to?
I don't know if I have specific favorites because it depends on my mood and the show. Any song by Herb Alpert or Artie Shaw, and of course, my favorite music of all time to perform to would be by Earl Bostic; his song Jungle Drums is a pretty good measure of the kind of music I like to perform to and very fitting for my burlesque persona.

What three items could you not live without as a performer?
Three? Only THREE? Ok, well then I will cheat if I can.
1) My makeup bag full of red lip sticks, glitter, liquid eye liner, and false eye lashes
2) My Glue Gun
3) Super Strength Water Proof Band Aids (when the pasties WONT stick for whatever reason or you don't have time between costume changes for spirit gum to dry a couple of those bad boys hot glue gunned to the back of a pair of pasties will help save what little modesty you have left!)

Who had the biggest influence on your career?
The seeds of my burlesque love affair were planted when I was just a small child by Tex Avery cartoons. But without a doubt, hands-down Dixie Evans has been my biggest inspiration. I hope to some day meet her - it would be such an honor.

Who is your favorite burly queen?
Dixie Evans will always be my number one but I am in awe of so many modern burlesque dancers like Dirty Martini, Kitten Deville, AngiePontani, Michelle L'Amour, Bambi The Mermaid...the list goes on!

What is your favorite item of clothing?
Sadly, my flannel PJs. Much to my boyfriend's disappointment I'm a jammie girl when I get home.

What’s the last movie you saw?
In the movie theater, Jurassic Park 35mm screening a few weeks ago. I watch a lot of movies at home especially independent weird stuff my film buff boy friend brings home.

What’s on your must-see-TV list?
Mad Men, Dexter, True Blood (vampire Bill is so dreamy!), Family Guy,and I was totally digging Dollhouse for a while too.

What book is on your nightstand?
I don't have much time for reading but I'm sure there's a candy bar wrapper on the night stand. It has writing on it. Does that count?

If you could go anywhere for vacation, where would you go?
The UK, I grew up there and haven't been back since we moved to Canada when I was in my early teens.

If you could have any superpower, which one would you want? Why?
Well, with super power comes super responsibilities. I have enough responsibilities as it is so I might pass on this one lest I end up making more work for myself!
