The Candy Gram: Ophelia Flame

As things heat up in Minneapolis-St. Paul, we dish up a red-hot treat with the city's own Ophelia Flame.

What is your hometown?
Uptown Minneapolis, MN

How long have you been interested in burlesque/performing?
I've been taking my clothes off for friends, family and complete strangers for nearly twenty years. I worked as a topless dancer in Minneapolis, Chicago, New Orleans and Las Vegas throughout the 1990s. I found my tribe in 1999 at the Burlesque Museum where I gained the honoree title of Miss Exotic World runner-up.

Although some do, I don't make a hard distinction between burlesque, stripping, peeling, exotic dancing or what ever you want to call it. Intention plays a large part but in the end aren't the names just euphemisms for taking your clothes off? It's simply a matter of how long it takes you to do it. My dance style has remained the same only now, I seem to spend more then I make. I'm completely fascinated by all aspects of the art of the tease and those that both love and hate it.

How many pairs of pasties do you own?
About eight, that is until I make Indigo Blue my sugar momma. Then I'll have them ALL Mwahahahah!

What are your three favorite songs to perform to?
I suppose my three favorite acts:
Tequila by The Champs (dressed as a tequila bottle w/ undulating body worm)
Stormy Weather by Etta James (with prop umbrella that rotates and rains confetti)
The Laundromat Blues by The '5' Royals (with prop washing machine that lights up and shoots bubbles)

What three items could you not live without as a performer?
Toupee tape, a good sense of humor and fellow producer friend Gina Louise.

Who had the biggest influence on your career?
Two time MEW, Stephanie Blake! I call her my "Big Sister of Burlesque." When I made my first sojourn to Exotic World I emailed to ask her what the heck to expect. She was so sweet, helpful and supportive. We've been friends ever since and adore her. Plus she tells me I should have won every year. I think that's adorable. Also my Minneapolis crew, Lili's Burlesque Revue. They're amazing women and great friends.

Who is your favorite burly queen?
Well geesh how do you pick one?! Dixie Evans for being our tribal leader and just a peach of a woman, Lili St. Cyr for being so dang hot, an elegant dancer and a local inspiration. Toni Elling and Lottie the Body for being beautiful, classy and proud in the face of discrimination. I also adore contemporary touch stones like Michelle L'Amour, Julia Atlas Muz and Jo Boobs.

What is your favorite item of clothing?
I'm rather fond of shoes. They protect your feet, make your legs appear longer and look great standing, sitting or in the air darlings! Heheh, I just blushed a little. I am from Minneapolis, you know.

What's the last movie you saw?
Blade Runner, for about the millionth time. Delicious.

What's on your must-see-TV list?
Battlestar Galactica, Six Feet Under, Big Love, Entourage, Dr. Who, The Office, Pushing Dasies. It's true, I'm a TV whore.

What book is on your nightstand?
Gilded Lili by Kelly DiNardo and Grist for the Mill by Ram Dass

If you could go anywhere for vacation, where would you go?
Any where where I can lounge in the sun, swim, get a chelada & ceviche lunch, a nice cup of coffee and meet interesting people. Mexico usually does the trick and I'm rather fond of the Costa Del Sol.

If you could have any superpower, which one would you want? Why?
Flying. I know it's a standard but that way I can jet off to my favorite beach, burlesque festival of even the liquor store on a moments notice. I suppose it would also come in handy during uncomfortable conversations, embarrassing moments or when you've just plain had enough.

Satisfy your appetite for more Candy Grams: Panache La Plume, Ginger Valentine, Madame Rosebud, Little Brooklyn, Victoria Veneance, Sauci Calla Horra, Penny Starr Jr., Gemma Parker, Darla DeVine, Sparkly Devil, Vivienne VaVoom, Lux LaCroix, Charlotte La Belle Araignee, Bunny Love, Amber Topaz, Amelie Soleil, Red Hot Annie, HoneyLu, Kimberlee Rose, Vicky Butterfly, Dominique Immora, Yasmine Vine, Cherry Bomb, Millie Dollar, Joanie Gyoza, Bonbon Vivant, Lola Martinet, Frankie Boudoir, Vixen Violette, Ravenna Black, Veronica Lashe, Amber Ray, Beatrix von Bourbon, Angie Pontani, Tanya Cheex, Bloody Belle, Clams Casino, Trixie Little, Michelle L'Amour, Margaret Cho, Miss Dirty Martini, Princess Farhana, Miss Delirium Tremens, Paris Green, Jo Boobs, Jack Midnight, Heidi Von Haught, Diamond Minx, The Titillation Twins, Scratch, Creamy Stevens and Gina Louise.

Revealing Images: Jo Boobs

The Candy Pitch is pleased to announce a tasty new feature, Revealing Images, in which photographer Don Spiro shares some of his favorite burlesque photos and the stories behind them. Don's first treat is a photo of the ever-lovely Jo Boobs.

This picture was taken back in the day when I was only shooting film. I used an old trusty Nikon 35mm. I didn’t have a studio so Jo asked her friend Whitney if we could shoot at her place in Manhattan. Whitney had amazing artwork on the walls, fabulous furniture and plenty of taxidermy and other bizarre props.

When I shoot I try to get something of the subject’s personality in the picture. Jo founded the NY School of Burlesque, she radiates confidence and on stage she can be captivating. She styled the shoot and came up with her own poses, I didn’t have to direct her other than to adjust for lighting or composition.

The space was small, regular lights might trip a circuit and strobes would have been overpowering, so I rented a Dedo light kit, which is extremely small and directional. Once I composed the image through the lens I trained one light high and just to the right of my camera, illuminating her body from head to toe and casting hard shadows down and to the left. I used the light’s barndoors to cut the spill light off of the right side of the frame and moved a stuffed cat into the light by her feet to balance the image.

A stuffed beaver was on a table by her waist, so I brought a second light in close and covered it with diffusion to make it very soft, bringing the beaver out from the darkness and lightening the shadows on Jo’s body. I wanted to emphasize how pale she is so I over-exposed her body by two stops, which also made the red costume just pop.

The Candy Gram: Vivienne VaVoom

Just in case things aren't hot enough in Denver yet, The Candy Pitch is re-running our Candy Gram with the city's very own Vivienne VaVoom.

What is your hometown?
Denver

How long have you been interested in burlesque/performing?
Ten years this summer!

How many pairs of pasties do you own?
Countless - I have a large Tupperware full of them.

What are your three favorite songs to perform to?
David Rose's Banned in Boston (My MEW song!), Petula Clark's version of Whatever Lola Wants in French, and Lucienne Boyer's Parlez-moi D'amour (for my fan dance).

What three items could you not live without as a performer?
False eyelashes, good shoes, lots and lots of glitter and rhinestones.

Who had the biggest influence on your career?
Miss Dirty Martini. She embodies that old burlesque bump-n-grind aesthetic, which I love. When I'm teaching burlesque she's my favorite example of someone who knows every song she performs to inside and out. Her body emphasizes every drum beat, and grinds to every horn wail, her clothes come off precisely in time with the music. I grin like a maniac every time I see her perform, I just love watching her so much and I learn something new every time I see her.

Who is your favorite burly queen?
Gypsy Rose Lee - her self-transformation from vaudeville tramp to a burlesque queen featured on the pages of Vogue, is very inspiring. And I love that she had a sewing machine with her at all times (I think it was mounted in the trunk of her car).

What is your favorite item of clothing?
Burlesque: the cincher from my red corset. I made it myself, and while it's not perfect, it's pretty darned good!
Other: My satin rust colored floor length dress. It makes me feel like a movie star when I wear it!

What's the last movie you saw?
Ms. Pettigrew Lives for a Day Lovely costumes - I want to be Amy Adams' character and I REALLY want a Ms. Pettigrew.

What's on your must-see-TV list?
I'm hoping Pushing Daisies comes back in the fall. I really miss it!

What book is on your nightstand?
Gilded Lili: Lili St. Cyr and the Striptease Mystique and The Happy Stripper: Pleasures and Politics of the New Burlesque.

If you could go anywhere for vacation, where would you go?
I love Tulum, Mexico, but really any remote place with a good beach, warm ocean and clothing optional. While I love dressing up it's nice to not have to glamour up and just go totally au naturale for a few days.

If you could have any superpower, which one would you want? Why?
Magic lasso, bullet deflecting wrist cuffs, an invisible plane ... I'm completely obsessed with Wonder Woman.

Satisfy your appetite for more Candy Grams: Panache La Plume, Ginger Valentine, Madame Rosebud, Little Brooklyn, Victoria Veneance, Sauci Calla Horra, Penny Starr Jr., Gemma Parker, Darla DeVine, Sparkly Devil, Vivienne VaVoom, Lux LaCroix, Charlotte La Belle Araignee, Bunny Love, Amber Topaz, Amelie Soleil, Red Hot Annie, HoneyLu, Kimberlee Rose, Vicky Butterfly, Dominique Immora, Yasmine Vine, Cherry Bomb, Millie Dollar, Joanie Gyoza, Bonbon Vivant, Lola Martinet, Frankie Boudoir, Vixen Violette, Ravenna Black, Veronica Lashe, Amber Ray, Beatrix von Bourbon, Angie Pontani, Tanya Cheex, Bloody Belle, Clams Casino, Trixie Little, Michelle L'Amour, Margaret Cho, Miss Dirty Martini, Princess Farhana, Miss Delirium Tremens, Paris Green, Jo Boobs, Jack Midnight, Heidi Von Haught, Diamond Minx, The Titillation Twins, Scratch, Creamy Stevens and Gina Louise.

Anna Faris Strips

The House Bunny, a film about what happens when a Bunny gets too old to keep taking it all off, premieres today. The film's star, Anna Faris told Playboy. "About three years ago I was thinking, What happens when a Bunny gets a little too old and it’s time for her to move on and adjust to a different reality? I had a dark version, with the character becoming a drug addict and returning to her small Christian Alabama town, but that wasn’t very commercial. I pitched the character to the screenwriters of Legally Blonde. They wrote a treatment, and I pitched it with them all around town, dressed as the character and saying the lines we’d created. Adam Sandler’s company, Happy Madison, and Sony said yes, and three months later we were shooting the movie. It has been a weirdly positive experience."

The Candy Gram: Panache La Plume

In our ongoing Q&A series --"The Candy Gram"-- we ask the same quirky questions of burlesque's various performers. If you want to be added to the mix, drop us a line at kellydinardo AT gmail DOT com. Today, say hello to Panache La Plume.

What is your hometown?
Portland, OR

How long have you been interested in burlesque/performing?
I guess I've always been intrigued by the glamor and naughtiness of vintage pin-up girls, show girls, and burlesque queens, but I never dreamed I'd have the opportunity, much less the courage, to act out my glamor girl fantasies. When I discovered Miss Indigo Blue and her Academy of Burlesque, it looked like so much fun I said, "Why not?" and decided to enroll in the Burlesque 101 class as a 50th birthday present to myself. It took me another year to get up the nerve to actually do it, but I'm so glad I did! My class just happened to be the subject of a musical documentary called A Wink and A Smile by Seattle filmmaker Deirdre Timmons, which recently premiered at the Seattle International Film Festival. It was an amazing project, which sort of threw me into the local burlesque scene. I've gotten to perform about a dozen or so times since.

How many pairs of pasties do you own?
Five and counting. Indigo Blue made my first pair ~ feathery green puffs, and I made the rest ~ flaming feathers, studded leatherette, baby blue puffs and denim with big red buttons. I haven't tackled tassels yet.

What are your three favorite songs to perform to?
Old jazzy stuff ~ Pearl Bailey's El Rancho Grande, Coleman Hawkins' Organ Grinder's Swing, Georgia Gibb's Kiss of Fire.

What three items could you not live without as a performer?
False eyelashes. A good mirror. A stiff drink.

Who had the biggest influence on your career?
Miss Indigo Blue and The Shanghai Pearl - two ladies with incredible energy and imagination!

Who is your favorite burly queen?
No favorite, really. I admire everyone from Gypsy Rose Lee to Dita Von Teese.

What is your favorite item of clothing?
My leopard-fur jacket. Made in the '50s, unearthed in the '80s, worn ever since ... and always in style.

What's the last movie you saw?
Death at a Funeral on DVD and You Don't Mess with the Zohan at the theater. Stupid, but I'm kinda hot for Adam Sandler.

What's on your must-see-TV list?
Antiques Roadshow. Old sitcoms - I Love Lucy, Dobie Gillis, Get Smart, I Dream of Jeannie. And Seinfeld reruns.

What book is on your nightstand?
Two library books: a delightful biography of Diana Vreeland and a surprisingly dry biography of Andy Warhol.

If you could go anywhere for vacation, where would you go?
I'd time travel to 1920s Paris so I could hang out with artists and lovers in Montparnasse.

If you could have any superpower, which one would you want? Why?
Teleportation. I always say I'd like traveling a lot more if it wasn't for the *traveling* part, so that would come in handy. Oh, and then I really could take that trip to Paris!

Dita Von Teese dishes with AskMen.com. She admits one of her favorite photo shoots was posing nude with Scarlett Johansson nibbling on my ear. As for whether anything is "off limits," the burly queen said:

"For a show? Well, no religious imagery in my shows... and I make every attempt to keep from being offensive in a political way. But I was once accused of promoting the war by wearing a pink cowgirl costume and riding a bucking, spinning MAC Viva Glam lipstick. The “Lipteese” performance was created to promote the sale of the lipstick, which has made 100 million dollars for people with HIV. But still someone said it was like I was a cowboy, like President Bush, and that I was really riding a bomb. Ridiculous!"

In our ongoing Q&A series --"The Candy Gram"-- we ask the same quirky questions of burlesque's various performers. If you want to be added to the mix, drop us a line at kellydinardo AT gmail DOT com. Today, say hello to Ginger Valentine.

What is your hometown?
Dallas

How long have you been interested in burlesque/performing?
My mother put me in dance class at the age of three because I kept putting on "shows" for my parents. I studied jazz, ballet and tap, but as I got older, I fell in love with ballet. I originally wanted to be a ballerina, and I was for a while after I graduated, but weak ankles and knee surgery made me hang up my pointe shoes. I had been interested in burlesque, vaudeville and cabaret-style entertainment all my life because I grew up watching old movies and musicals. The first time I saw Cabaret though, that's when I knew I had to do something like that. At the time I just didn't know how to get started.

How many pairs of pasties do you own?
None! The troupe I perform in, The Velvet Kittens of Le Cabaret Burlesque, is a vaudevillian burlesque troupe and we don't strip down to pasties. Our shows are similar to the shows in the musical Cabaret.

What are your three favorite songs to perform to?
Harlem Nocturne, This Business of Love, The Stripper -- it's classic!

What three items could you not live without as a performer?
Glitter, Revlon's Love that Red lipstick, and my curlers

Who had the biggest influence on your career?
Bob Fosse. I love his style, I love his everything.

Who is your favorite burly queen?
Gypsy Rose Lee. She was so funny. I named my cat after her.

What is your favorite item of clothing?
I got a red silk kimono for Christmas last year. It's covered with tiny white hearts and I love it. It's my uniform around the house.

What's the last movie you saw?
Oh no! Do I have to answer honestly? The last movie I saw was Splash with Darryl Hannah and Tom Hanks. I love that movie! Eugene Levy is in it as well, and he's hilarious.

What's on your must-see-TV list?
If it's about dancing, cooking or baby animals, I'm tuning in.

What book is on your nightstand?
The Four Agreements by Don Miquel Ruiz

If you could go anywhere for vacation, where would you go?
Currently, I'd say Lake Louise in the winter.

If you could have any superpower, which one would you want? Why?
With the crazy schedule I keep, it'd be nice to be able to be in two places at once!

In our ongoing Q&A series --"The Candy Gram"-- we ask the same quirky questions of burlesque's various performers. If you want to be added to the mix, drop us a line at kellydinardo AT gmail DOT com. Today, say hello to New York's Madame Rosebud of The Peach Tartes.

What is your hometown?
New York City where there's glitter in the sidewalks

How long have you been interested in burlesque/performing?
My mother says I've been "stripping" and calling people "honey" like Jessica Rabbit since I was three. I've been performing in musicals, operas, and plays since middle school. But my favorite role has been Cherry in William Inge's Bus Stop that should have tipped me off.

How many pairs of pasties do you own?
Actually I only own three lovely twirly pairs by the wonderful Rubie Fizz, I'm a fan of colored electrical tape.

What are your three favorite songs to perform to?
I'm Not In Love With You by Immogen Heap
Air Bag covered by The Vitamin String Quartet
Strangers on a Train by Lovage

What three items could you not live without as a performer?
Kimonos, Fetish Heels, and RED lipstick

Who had the biggest influence on your career?
Tigger, he is fearless, shameless, romantic, well researched, beautiful, and a consummate professional. He is a joy backstage as well as in the spot light, he also has the classiest way of passing knowledge onto a performer. Immodesty Blaize in her own way has really helped me focus what my ideas of "good" and "great" burlesque are. She has a way of imbuing classical style with so much sass and pow, it becomes immediately original and breathtaking.

Who is your favorite burly queen?
There are soooo many! Well I'm partial to NYC's own Tigger, Julie Atlas Muz, Little Brooklyn, Nasty Canasta, Clams Casino, The World Famous Bob. I love everyone that makes up this community, but I'd have to say currently Immodesty claims that title as well as the ladies in my troupe The Peach Tartes.

What is your favorite item of clothing?
My leopard print '40s style turban.

What’s the last movie you saw?
The lush and groundbreaking Flower Drum Song

What’s on your must-see-TV list?
TCM! They're almost always showing something great.

What book is on your nightstand?
The Asian Mystique by Sheridan Prasso and Snow Flower and the Secret Fan by Lisa See

If you could go anywhere for vacation, where would you go?
I would take my honey moon in Japan! If I could have any wish I would be a passenger on the Orient Express in the 1920's, or I'd be seeing Mata Harri perform in Paris.

If you could have any superpower, which one would you want? Why?
I would be able to become invisible because that's the ultimate tease. Can you just imagine?
